U.S.-China trade talks were “on the right track,” said Di Xu, chief engineer, Economic and Strategy Research Center, China Waterborne Transport Research Institute, during the opening session of 2019 Breakbulk Asia Wednesday.

However, he warned the U.S. will maintain pressure long-term on China, and there’s concern that such frictions will spread globally.

Nonetheless, China needs “to make best use of our advantages to reduce costs and use the latest technologies to find a competitive edge.” This includes a growing emphasis on service in addition to manufacturing, both globally and domestically.
