Matthew Qi graduated from Shanghai Maritime University and then joined Shanghai Shipping Exchange, which enabled him to build a social network and explore shipping business and operations. Beyond Shipping, which was established in 2011 by Matthew, is a new media publication focusing on shipping news and information,consulting and data services. It is fast-growing and has become one of the most influential shipping media publications in China, with more than one million readers and customers worldwide. Every year, Beyond Shipping organizes a series of  conferences and forums, including International Shipping and Internet Forum, International Shipping and Finance Summit, and an award ceremony for the top 100 Chinese people who have the biggest contribution to the shipping industry. These events attract more than 250 shipping companies, shipyards, port operators and other key market players.

In 2018, Matthew started to explore blockchain applications in the shipping industry. He believes that blockchain technology will make a great difference to the shipping industry, especially in container sharing and maritime insurance. Matthew has been awarded the Top Ten Outstanding Lujiazui Youth and May 4th Youth Medal of Shanghai, and he is also the secretary-general of Chinese Technology and Innovation Consortium for Port & Shipping and secretary-general of Shanghai Maritime University Alumni Entrepreneurs.
